Cross-Border Estate Planning Between Cyprus and the UK

An estate plan should work across every jurisdiction in which a family owns assets—not create competing instructions after death.

Families with homes, investments or business interests in both Cyprus and the United Kingdom need an estate plan built around the complete asset picture. A will prepared in isolation may be valid yet still produce delay, duplication or an unintended distribution.

Map ownership before drafting

Begin with the registered owner, location and legal character of each material asset. Property, company shares, joint accounts, pensions and trusts may pass under different rules. The plan must also distinguish legal title from beneficial ownership.

Coordinate wills and revocation clauses

More than one will can be useful, but each document must be drafted so that it does not revoke the other. Executors and advisers should know that coordinated documents exist and where the originals are held.

Consider residence and succession rules

Domicile, habitual residence and nationality can affect succession and taxation. These questions should be reviewed using current advice in each relevant jurisdiction rather than assumed from citizenship or where a person happens to live.

Make administration practical

A sound plan anticipates the documents, grants and translations that representatives will need. Clear records of ownership, liabilities and professional contacts can save an estate months of avoidable investigation.
